The Best Hair Appointment Ever: Hair Filler @ Daniel Hersheson

Yesterday I visited the Daniel Hersheson salon on the 4th floor of Harvey Nichols, and honestly, it was one of the best and most satisfying hairdressing appointments OF MY LIFE.

I went in with a technically dodgy haircut, and came out with an entirely re-booted barnet, all thanks to a pioneering ‘Hair filler’ treatment, followed by the most considered hair cut and finish I think I’ve ever experienced …

Allow me to give you a little hair history:

Guys, I’ve had a string of awful and unflattering haircuts, and have been left with what felt like virtually no hair what-so-ever; terrible layers (which I didn’t want nor request) and no sidey-bits left at all to frame my face, play with or style (and hide my double-chin). I was sad, miserable and unfulfilled in the hair department to say the very least; sick of rubbish chain salons with dirty mugs; fed-up with the shampoo girls who blatantly lie to me during a series of half-arsed grunts about what products will change my life (listen Miss, I know you’re under pressure to up-sell, but please know that my bathroom resembles a SpaceNK flagship store, so if I want that life changing shampoo, you’ll be the first to know) disillusioned by stylists who take no time to figure out what might actually suit my hair type and my face, and well, I dunno, look half-way okay when I walk out.

And so when my last colour and cut service totalled a cool £190 for the privilege of looking like an old-lady with no hair (not to mention the loss of 4 mind-numbing hours which I will never get back) I decided to actively search for a new hair plan. A good blimmin’ hair-do for my money, please, if it’s not too much trouble?

So, with this in mind, I decided to venture into the big smoke in search of a new hairdresser. Y’know, instead of trying to find a local stylist who might be able to copy the picture of Sienna Miller that I take with me, and offer up with a faint glimmer of hope in my heart (knowing full well that I have NO CHANCE of getting my Sienna-on any time soon), how about I find the salon that actually does Sienna Millers hair, AND all of the other cool cuts I find on google? – The stylists who actually set those hair trends, not follow them. And my findings following some extensive hair detective work? – Daniel Hersheson of course, so I promptly picked up the phone, and I made it so. Yes I did. ‘Cool girl’ hair here I come …

I took this picture before leaving the house in the morning:

As you can see, its thin, and a bit shit. Sure its thin hair by nature, its always been like baby hair. And over time, age, 4 pregnancies and a life long highlighting habit hasn’t exactly helped it to thicken up. But that said: the series of hairdressers who in the last year decided that my thin hair might benefit from some short layers and half of the sides being LOPPED OFF, deserve to be sent to hairdressing jail. Stat.

Thankfully, I’m not alone, because according to the guys at Daniel Hersheson, bad hair cuts on thinning hair is an all too common problem, but one which can easily be fixed. Cue. ‘Hair filler’. a service devised entirely by Hadley Yates at Daniel Hersheson involving micro fine hair extensions being added to your own hair cut, adding volume not length, patching in the missing bits around your hairline; giving an undetectable boost to your own ‘do’: Its your hair, only better they say. This express service takes one hour and costs £250. Some may think this is a lot, but compared with traditional hair extension prices, I think its extremely reasonable, especially when you consider the level of expertise you are paying for.

As soon as I walked in and was seated, I knew that this wasn’t going to be just any old salon appointment. Firsly, my coat was taken by a lovely concierge lady in a white coat. Then, my water arrived with all the frills of a silver service waiter. For this, I need you to imagine a James Bond-esq man walking up to me …” Your water, Madam” … complete with all the water trimmings. Its Harvey Nicks – Of course you get a glass of ice and a saucer of lemon slices. And this right here, this, this is exactly what I like – PROPER SERVICE, and not a single dirty mug in sight. Call me fussy, But if I’m paying for something, I want it to be good.

Next, the ever-so lovely Brogan came over and introduced herself to me, letting me know that she was Hadley’s assistant, and therefore available to me throughout the appointment for anything that I might need. She made it abundantly clear: this was my appointment, and my comfort and happiness was paramount to her. Naturally, I loved her immediately! she took me through to the, frankly, beautiful basin area (each individual basin is screened-off with a silver bead curtain for client privacy) and she explained the treatment process in-depth, whist washing my hair before taking me over to my seat for the next hour, where I met Hadley: My man for the job; the hair extension master to London’s rich and famous. And me.

He rough dried my hair (see before picture) before setting to work with the hair fillers. He was quick but meticulous. Efficient yet considered. I knew immediately that I was in safe hair hands … (a feeling I haven’t had a for a while) You only had to look around the place to feel at ease, as every single client looked amazing as they left. (Also, I don’t think I’ve ever seen so many Chloe handbags and Stuart Weitzman boots in one place before?)

Hadley was super lovely, and a real pleasure to sit and chat with. During the treatment, He placed tiny and undetectable hair extensions around the side of my face (none were needed in the back) and my stylist Shelley came over regularly to consult with Hadley about the placement of fillers in relation to her cut that she would do afterwards – they were working together to achieve a result that would leave me with a kind of improved subtlety that cant quite be placed by others. Still me, remember, just a bit better. Because of the micro fine nature of the fillers and the keratin bonds, this treatment lasts a bit longer than standard hair extensions, and will be good-to-go for at least 3-4 months.

Once Hadley was finished ‘filling’ my hair, Shelly began the cut and finish. She assessed my face and hair, stood back, assessed, pondered, played around with my hair, and assessed some more before getting to work on a style which would work well for my hair right now, and also moving forward with operation ‘Grow hair, grow!’. I liked her a lot and put complete trust in her – there was no way this girl gonna give me a bad cut and it was no surprise at all to hear that she has a background in fine art and sculpture, she is clearly an artist at what she does. As is Hadley. I think I definitely love them both now, quite a lot. Not in weird way. Just in a ‘thank you a million times over for what you’ve done for me’, way.

The attention to detail that both me and my hair received was amazing, as was the entire salon vibe – It wasn’t uncomfortable, up-tight, or pretentious in the slightest. There was none of that standard hairdressing bullshit that we all come to expect. At no stage did I feel embarrassed about my knackered old hair, or its many, many split-ends … no-one patronised me about using bleach (duh, I know its damaging), no-one spent the whole time trying to sell me bloody shampoo, and not one single person asked me if I ‘had any holidays booked’ … It was both blissful and refreshing.

I have found my hair Holy Grail, and I for one cant be more thrilled about it.

Thank you so much for reading. Please find all of the salons links and deets below for your reference. I cant recommend this place enough, I really cant. So if you live close enough, and are currently ‘in-between’ hairdressers, try it. Try it just once, or treat someone this Christmas. I promise you will love it,

Anna x

      Hi Jayne,

I did feel like a queen, for sure. And then it was back to reality with 4 hungry children and a messy house … and not a single plate of lemon slices to be found anywhere!

Unfortunately, I probably pay that much for hair cuts over about 5 years so it’s a bit out of my price range. Sounds AMAZING though.

Hi Lyndsey, I know, it is a lot, but I guess because I’ve always had colour, I’ve learnt through trial and error (make that: disaster) That usually, (not always) good colourists come with a price tag.
      thanks for reading,

I had never heard of hair filler before. It is a lot of money but if it improves how you feel about your hair then it was worth it.x

      Hi Rachel,
Yes, I definitely do feel better, and so if it helps me to have some better hair days whilst it grows back, then I’m super happy to make the trip up to Harvey Nicks 🙂
